About CPCS

What Is A CPCS Card?

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) verifies that plant operators have the skills, knowledge and experience to safely operate specific categories of construction plant. There are three main card types, each reflecting a different stage of training and experience.

CPCS Red Trained Operator Card

CPCS Red Trained Operator Card

Issued on successful completion of the CPCS Theory and Practical Technical Tests, which must be taken at a CPCS-accredited test centre.

  • Pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test
  • Achieve the CPCS theory test (within two years of the CITB test)
  • Achieve the CPCS practical test (within six months of the CPCS theory test)
CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card

CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card

Confirms you have demonstrated health, safety and environment awareness through the CITB test, underpinning knowledge through a CPCS theory test, operating ability through a CPCS practical test, and operating competence evidenced by a vocational qualification (VQ). Valid for five years and renewable — holders can work unsupervised and may supervise Red Trained Operators.

  • Provide proof of achievement of the VQ/NVQ for the category
  • Pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test
  • Achieve the CPCS theory test (within two years of the CITB test)
  • Achieve the CPCS practical test (within six months of the CPCS theory test)

For experienced operators who are trained and assessed to independently and impartially deliver learning or judge a learner's skills and knowledge, evidenced through a Record of Category Experience (RoE).

  • Hold a valid, in-date first aid certificate
  • Pass the Managers & Professionals (MAP) CITB test
  • Achieve the CPCS Advanced Theory Test
  • Achieve the CPCS Advanced Practical Test
  • Hold a recognised Health & Safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH Construction Certificate, SMSTS or IOSH Managing Safely)

How To Book Your CPCS Renewal Test

To renew your CPCS Blue Competent Operator card, you must take and pass the CPCS Renewal Test. This confirms your knowledge of each plant category, or group of categories, held on your card is up to date.
